KT NEWS SERVICE. Dated: 10/18/2017 10:12:59 AM
SRINAGAR, Oct 17: Director General of Police (DGP) Dr S P Vaid today said that police cannot book innocents in braid chopping cases.
He said Special Investigation Teams (SITs) have been framed in every district and the DSP headquarters has been made member of the SITs to be headed by the respective DCs.
Talking to KNS, Vaid said that the members of the SIT will visit the victims and record their statements. He, however, said that the reports about braid chopping are pouring in but they do not have evidences to probe the cases. “We do not get witnesses. We are faced with lack of evidence. When we do not have evidence how can we find the braid chopper,” he said.
He said such cases occurred in Uttar Pradesh where 3000 incidents were reported and later it spread to Haryana and Punjab. “254 cases occurred in Jammu. It then spread to south Kashmir and now in Central and north Kashmir,” he said.
He said wherever they have arrested suspects; they turned out to be labourers or other people who were not involved in braid chopping. “We cannot book innocents. The society has to cooperate with us,” the DGP said.
