PULWAMA, Oct 17: A complete shutdown was observed in Pulwama township on Tuesday after the unidentified persons chopped the braid of a woman on Monday evening.
Local sources said that the braid of a woman in her late 40s was chopped off Monday evening when she was working in her small vegetable farm near her house in Dangerpora locality of the town.
To protest the incident the town observed a complete shutdown today with all the shops, other business and private offices remaining shut. Traffic also remained off the roads.
Local sources said that early in the morning as the shopkeepers had just begun to open their shops, scores of youth took to streets, held protests and enforced the shutdown.
Locals accused the government of failing to curb the menace of hair chopping incidents across the valley.
"The increasing braid cutting incidents have caused fear psychosis among the people and authorities have failed to control the menace," locals alleged.
Around 100 hundred incidents of hair chopping were reported from different parts of the valley during last nearly one month. Though the government has formed village level committees in various southern districts to maintain a round the clock vigil bit there is no let up in such incidents.
