‘Kashmir bracing for another wet spell’

Temperatures plunge below freezing point at many places, city records lowest

SRINAGAR, Nov 21: While the state meteorological department has predicted another wet spell in Kashmir in a couple of days, the minimum temperature plunged several degrees below freezing point in many places in Kashmir and Ladakh division on Monday.
According to the officials at Met department Srinagar recorded a low of minus 1.7 degrees Celsius on Monday night.
The Met department revealed that it was the lowest night temperature witnessed in Srinagar this season so far.
"There has been a dip in maximum and minimum temperature in Kashmir valley on Monday night. Srinagar also recorded the coldest night of this season so far, with night temperature dropping to minus 1.7 degrees Celsius. Night temperature settled below freezing point at many other places in Kashmir on Monday," spokesperson at met department said.
The spokesperson at Met department said that minimum temperature was likely to drop further till next spell of Western disturbances would hit the state.
He said that Kashmir was bracing for more precipitation which is likely expected next week. He said though weather would remain dry during next 24 hours.
"There are predictions of light to moderate rain/snow in the state of Jammu and Kashmir during next week. This week weather will remain mostly dry and cloudy," a Met official said.
The Met department has predicted dry weather and more dip in minimum temperature in the state during next 24 hours.
Met office revealed that ski resort of Gulmarg recorded a maximum temperature of minus 5.6 degrees Celsius while the night temperature in Pahalgam settled at minus 2.7 degrees Celsius on Monday.
"Weather is likely to remain dry during next 24 hours. However there are chances of light rain/snow at isolated places especially higher reaches in the state. There is likely to be further drop in minimum temperature in the state till next wet spell hits," spokesperson at met department said.
Meanwhile, Leh town in Ladakh division recorded the low of minus 10.2 degrees Celsius on Monday night. Leh has been the coldest place in the state with temperature plunging over 10 degrees below freezing point.
"Leh recorded a minimum temperature of minus 10.2 degrees Celsius on Monday while the minimum temperature in Kargil settled at minus 6.6 degrees Celsius," a Met official said.
