Snow, rains continue across J&K; Srinagar receives first snowfall

SRINAGAR, Dec 12: The summer capital of Srinagar recorded this winter season's first snowfall last night bringing much awaited cheer across the city and a respite from the dry weather conditions.
However, the weather conditions improved in the afternoon and snowfall stopped in Srinagar and other plain areas.
According to the officials at state meteorological department, overnight snowfall occurred in Srinagar while rains/snow was recorded in most of the places in Kashmir and Ladakh division.
The Met officials revealed that Srinagar recorded around 3.1 cm of snow till Monday morning.
Meanwhile, light to moderate snowfall continued along several higher reaches of the state on Monday also while moderate to heavy rains were witnessed at most of the places.
The officials at Met department said that snowfall occurred in Gulmarg, Sonmarg, Pahalgam and all plain areas of Kashmir valley.
"Gulmarg recorded two feet snow on Monday while 25 cm snow was witnessed in Pahalgam area in south Kashmir. Snow/rains continued across Kashmir valley for the second consecutive day on Monday", spokesperson at Met department said.
The Met officials said that Srinagar recorded over 22.7 mm rain since Monday.
The Met officials revealed that Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 0.2 degrees Celsius on Monday.
"The minimum temperature has recorded a drop of few notches on Monday night. Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 6.5 degrees Celsius while the minimum temperature in Pahalgam settled at 0.1 degrees Celsius," a Met official said.
The Director Met office said there was possibility of more rain/snow in Kashmir during next 24 hours. However, the amount of precipitation would decline.
"Light to moderate rain/snow may occur at isolated places across the state during next 24 hours. The present weather condition will likely continue till December 15. However, the precipitation will decline in the coming days," spokesperson at Met department said.
Meanwhile, Srinagar Jammu national highway remained closed for vehicular traffic on Tuesday due to snow and rains at several places along the stretch.
The officials at traffic control room said that the road shall be restored for vehicles only after it is cleared off the snow and debris.
Pertinently, the 300-kms long stretch was closed for traffic movement on Monday evening due to heavy rains and snowfall.
