Mehbooba asks security forces to exercise restraint during searches

JAMMU, Jan 16: Amidst return of cordon and search operation in the capital city of Srinagar after a gap of 17 years, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti asked the security agencies to exercise maximum restraint and strictly ensure the safety and security of people and their properties.
Mehbooba was chairing the Unified Headquarters meeting in Jammu to review overall security scenario in the state including the situation along the borders.
Addressing the meeting, Chief Minister stressed upon the security agencies to adopt a more humane approach while dealing with the situations. She advised the security agencies to exercise maximum restraint and strictly ensure safety and security of people and their properties.
“The need of the hour is to engage meaningfully with the people, particularly youth, so that they are able to contribute to the society and its welfare. She stressed on increased community policing activities and enhanced outreach by the administration,” she said.
The meeting has come against the backdrop of resurgence of fidayeen attacks and tensions on the borders and the subsequent punitive action taken by Indian army to revenge the killing of Indian soldiers on the Line of Control.
Last year around 209 militants were killed by security forces during different anti terror operations across the Kashmir valley last year, which is highest since 2010. Around 24 civilians were killed during law and order problems near encounter sites last year.
More than 75 security men were also killed in gunfights across Kashmir valley last year Last year more than 117 local youth joined the militant ranks in the strife-torn Kashmir valley, which is the highest in last seven years.
The meeting was attended by top security honchos and senior officers of police and civil administration. They include Chief Secretary, BB Vyas Northern Army Commander Lt. Gen. Devraj Anbu, Principal Secretary, Home, R.K. Goyal; General Officer Command (GoC) of 9th Corps Lt. Gen. YVK Menon; GoC of 14th Corps, Lt. Gen. S K Upadhaya; GoC of 15thCorps, Lt. Gen. J S Sandhu; GoC of 16th Corps, Lt. Gen. Saranjeet Singh; Director General of Police, Dr. S P Vaid and others.
