Blast, firing in air by security forces create panic

ANANTNAG, Jan 19: At least eight policemen were injured in a grenade explosion in southern Pulwama town on Friday. Several vehicles also suffered damage due to the explosion.
Local and official sources said that some unidentified persons hurled a grenade towards police station Pulwama which exploded near Tehsil office premises with a bang.
In the explosion, they said, at least eight policemen of Indian reserve police (IRP) who were deployed there suffered injuries.
All the injured cops were immediately evacuated to district hospital Pulwama for treatment where from two of them were referred to Srinagar hospital on the basis of severity of their injuries.
Medical Superintendent, DH Pulwama, Dr Parra confirmed that eight cops were brought to the hospital with injuries.
"Six of them were treated here and two were referred to Srinagar. All the cops had received splinter injuries. Condition of all of them was stable," MS said.
Local sources said that the grenade explosion followed by aerial firing by the security forces created panic in the town.
"Soon after the grenade blast forces personal fired several warning shots in air creating panic among the shopkeepers and pedestrians who started running for their lives," local sources said.
Amid panic, they said, groups of youth assembled near the spot and pelted the security personnel with stones triggering clashes.
Security men later cordoned off the nearby localities and launched massive searches to nab the grenade throwers.
