PRINCE JEHANGIR
BANIHAL, Feb 12: The strategic Jammu-Srinagar highway was closed on Monday due to snowfall in the Banihal sector.

Traffic officials said. No vehicular traffic will be allowed on the highway due to continuous snowfall. "Clearance operations will begin once the snowfall stops," the officials said. Breaking the nearly two-month long dry spell, rain lashed the plains of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday while moderate to heavy snowfall has been reported from the higher reaches. On Sunday, the weather office issued an advisory for rains and snowfall besides avalanche warning.

Fresh snowfall and rains forced the closure of 300 kilometres long Jammu Srinagar national highway at various places in between Qazigund and Banihal sector.

Hundreds of vehicle got stranded at different places at Banihal, Tethar, Chareel, Nowgam and Shataninalla on Jammu Srinagar national highway.

Reports said that due to snowfall across Jawahar tunnel and shooting stones at the place of Battery Chasma and Digdol and Panthyal disrupted the vehicular traffic movement on Jammu Srinagar national highway.

Sources said that road becomes slippery due to snowfall in between Jawahar tunnel and Qazigund sector which prevents free movement of traffic on highway.

On the other hand shooting stones at multiple locations like Battery Chasma, Digdol and Panthyal also disrupted traffic movement on Jammu Srinagar national highway.

DySP traffic Banihal Vishal Manhas told KTNS that fresh snowfall across Jawahar tunnel suspended the traffic movement on highway. More than one feet snow has been accumulated in between Qazigund and Jawhar tunnel.

He further added that besides shooting stones, heavy rainfall triggerred a number of small and heavy landslides on highway in Digdol, Panthyal and Battery Chasma.

Bad weather creates hurdles in clearance of snowfall from the road, when weather permits road clearance works will start traffic officer.
