Protests rock KU, CU against Shopian killings

SRINAGAR, May 9: Protests rocked Kashmir University campus on Wednesday against the recent killings in Shopian district of South Kashmir.
Hundreds of students from different departments of the university staged a protest demonstration against the civilian killings and the killing of an assistant professor, Dr Rafi of the varsity’s sociology department, who had recently joined militancy.
The students, carrying banners and placards, were chanting slogans and marched towards the Allama Iqbal library of the university and staged protest demonstration.
The protesting students decried the civilian killings and the killing of the professor Dr. Rafi Bhat.
The protests were also joined by the faculty members of various departments of KU, who expressed deep shock and concern over the unabated spree of killings in Kashmir valley.
Pertinently six civilians and 5 militants were killed in Bedigam village and other areas of Shopian district of South Kashmir on Sunday.
Dr. Mohammad Rafi, an assistant professor at Kashmir University’s Sociology department was also among the militants killed in the encounter. Dr. Rafi had joined militancy barely 40 hours before he was killed in the encounter by the government forces.
Dr. Rafi’s killing has come as a deep shock to the faculty, colleagues and students of his department.
“We are still in shock. We have lost our beloved teacher, a genius and a great scholar and a dear friend. Nothing can fill the vacuum that has been created by his death,” the protesting students said.
“Every other day there is bloodshed, innocents are slaughtered yet nothing is being done to address the issue,” a student of the sociology department said.
Rafi had left KU late on Friday and since then there was no clue about his whereabouts. The news regarding Rafi’s killing during an encounter with government forces, left his family, friends, colleagues and his students shell shocked and devastated.
Slogans reverberated in KU campus as students carried on with the protest.
Meanwhile, protests against Shopian incidents were held in Islamic University of Science and Technology and Central University also.
Scores of students of Central University of Kashmir here in Nowgam held protest demonstration against the killings in Shopian. Carrying banners and placards students marched in the campus while chanting slogans.
