3 militants killed in Vilgam encounter

SRINSGAR, May 18: Army today claimed to have killed three militants in an encounter at Vilgam tehsil of Handwara in Kupwara district.
Quoting an unnamed army official, a local news agency reported the soldiers of 15 RR intercepted a group of militants believed to be infiltrators in Brinjal forest adjacent to Shahnagar Jat Gali, around seven kilometres from Tehsil headquarter Vilgam.
“The group of militants opened fire, which was retaliated by the troops triggering off a gunfight. The militants fired indiscriminately and in the gunfight three militants were killed,” he said.
“We are ascertaining their outfit affiliation,” the official said, adding the operation is still going on.
The operation took place two days after the home ministry has asked the forces to halt anti-militancy operations in Jammu and Kashmir during the month of Ramazan.
