Train servias resume after suspension

SRINAGAR, May 20: Barring some areas of old city of Srinagar, normalcy returned to Kashmir valley on Sunday after a day-long shutdown called by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) of Kashmir in view of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Kashmir valley.
Early on Sunday the shops, stores and other business establishments reopened in Srinagar city and other parts of Kashmir while vehicular traffic resumed normally along all routes of city and other districts of valley.
While curfew like restrictions were imposed in several parts of old Srinagar on Saturday, restrictions were lifted by the state authorities as life returned to normal across most parts of old Srinagar also. However, in some areas of old city of Srinagar restrictions continued today also.
On Saturday, the state government had put into place strict restrictions in several parts of old Srinagar while stringent security arrangements were made in several valley parts to thwart any protest or demonstration by the people.
Additional contingents of police and paramilitary personnel were deployed along all the roads to avoid any untoward incident.
All the restrictions and security deployment in some old city areas were lifted by the authorities early on Sunday.
Though being Sunday schools and government offices remained closed, routine work was resumed in various private departments across city.
Moreover the public and private transport plied normally on all roads.
Across south and northern parts of Kashmir valley normal life resumed as all business establishments were reopened and traffic was plying normally.
The resistance leadership had called for Kashmir shutdown on Saturday ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to valley. Pertinently, JRL had also called for a march towards Lal Chowk to protest Modi's visit.
Valley observed complete shutdown on Saturday while strict restrictions and security measures were put into place by the state government ahead of PM'S Kashmir visit.
Meanwhile, the train service from Banihal to Baramulla resumed on Sunday morning after remaining suspended for a day.
Considering the security reasons the authorities had suspended the train service on Saturday. Railway officials revealed that all trains scheduled for the day from Banihal to Baramulla were on time.
"The service was suspended on Saturday as a security measure. However, normal service resumed today morning," a railway official said.
