Weapon snatching attempt foiled in Wanpoh

ANANTNAG, May 25: Army's sniffer dog was killed after suspected militants on Friday hurled a grenade at their camp in Nihama area of southern Kulgam.
Following the grenade attack, army men allegedly went berserk and broke the glasses of dozens of vehicles and damaged the goods of shopkeepers.
Officials said that the suspected militants threw a grenade at 34 RR camp in the afternoon which exploded with a big bang in the premises of the camp. Though no army man died or suffered injuries in the grenade attack, but the official sources said that a sniffer dog of the army which was tied near the spot where the grenade exploded was killed.
SSP Kulgam, Harmeet Singh confirmed the grenade attack on army camp in Nihama.
"A sniffer dog has been killed in the explosion but there was no human loss," SP said.
After the grenade explosion, the army men, locals alleged came out of the camp and gave vent to their anger on the public property.
"The army men not only threw away and damaged the goods of shopkeepers but also smashed the wind screens of dozens of vehicles parked in the chowk," locals alleged.
The local shopkeepers to protest the army's action later downed their shops and held peaceful protests seeking compensation for the damage.
In Wanpoo area of the same district, militants made a bid to snatch the weapon from police men guarding the grid station, however their attempt was foiled.
Official sources said that a group of three militants approached towards power grid station with the intention to snatch the rifles from the cops.
"The sentry on duty on seeing the gunmen approaching towards him fired several rounds in air after which the militants fled from the spot," an official said.
