2 militants arrested after shootout in Thannamandi : SSP

RAJOURI, Jun 11: Security forces Monday claimed to have arrested two militants hailing from Kashmir, after a brief shootout at a naka at Thannamandi in Rajouri district and recovered stolen arms and ammunition from their possession.
“Today morning during wee hours a joint naka of Rajouri Police, 72 Bn CRPF and army (38 RR) laid on Rajouri-DKG road at Thannamandi Chowk was conducting random frisking of vehicles when a two motorcycle borne militants reached there. They were signalled to stop. As it was still dark around, taking advantage of the situation the duo sped up their motorcycle and left it there at some distance from naka and fired on chasing naka personnel. However the jawans of police, army and CRPF taking due caution swiftly overpowered the duo while putting their lives on risk and apprehended the duo. The prompt and swift action jawans saved the naka personnel as the duo could have tried to take position behind any object which could have lead to a difficult situation,” said SSP Rajouri Yougal Manhas while addressing media persons here while giving a detailed account of the incident.
“Soon after both the militants were overpowered and information was shared with officers, senior officers of police and army including SDPO Thannamandi Iftikar A Chowdhary and SHO Thannamandi Nazir Ahmad Dar along with reinforcement reached on spot and both the militants were arrested from the spot while whole area was cordoned and searches were launched,” he stated.
“The arrested militants have been identified as Mukhtar Ahmed, 22, son of Abdul Ahad Dar resident of New Colony, Safanagri (Zainapura) Shopian and Aijaz Ahmed Parray, 22, son of Sanullah Parray resident of Keshva, Chitragama, Shopian. Both are involved in militancy related cases of Police Station Zainapura in district Shopian. An Insas rifle with three magazines and 49 live cartridges along with two empty fired cartridges was recovered from their possession. At the time when area was under cordon near the shootout site, police persons deployed at police post BGSB Shrine Shahdra Sharif informed officers that a weapon (Insas) with magazines has been stolen by unidentified men from police barrack in wee hours,” said SSP Manhas who too had reached the spot along with the Additional SP Rajouri Mohammed Yousaf.
“During initial interrogation, both the arrested militants also disclosed that they stole the said weapon and magazines from police barrack by taking away the box of a police official and then breaking the lock and stealing away the weapon. The duo was to join Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) outfit in Shopian instantly and was in constant touch with HM commander Zeenat-ul-Islam operating in South Kashmir. Interrogation of both is going on and a case FIR 97/2018 U/S 307, 120-B, RPC, 7/27 IAA, 17/21/11/13 ULA Act was registered in Police Station Thannamandi,” he informed.
