Police foils teachers' sit in protest

SRINAGAR, June 13: Police today thwarted Teachers Joint Action Committee (TJAC) sit-in protest outside civil Secretariat against governments for allegedly overlooking the issues of SSA teachers. Scores of leaders including (TJAC) Chairman, Abdul Qayoom Wani were taken into preventive police custody.
The call for silent sit-in protest outside Civil Secretariat was given by Teachers Joint Action Committee (TJAC) an umbrella body which represents various teachers unions.
Chanting slogans like “de-link salaries of SSA teachers with state sector and implement seventh pay commission for SSA teachers” dozens of leaders headed by Abdul Qayoom Wani who also heads his faction of Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC) as per program gathered at Magarmal Bagh wherefrom they started marching towards Civil Secretariats.
On reaching Jehangir Chowk, the protesting leaders were intercepted by police and did not allowed to execute their program into reality triggering verbal arguments between the two sides. Police late took scores of leaders into preventive police custody.
Abdul Qayoom Wani, TJAC Chairman said the government has left SSA teachers with no other option than to hit streets in protest. He said the agitating teachers along with their families were forced for starvation by the government.
“There are 40,0000 SSA teachers working in different schools, these teachers were not engaged under any scheme but through state sixteen years ago, there issue is genuine as they want salaries to be released under seventh pay commission rules,” said Wani before being detained.
He said despite availing benefits including promotions at par with other government employees, government stoked controversy that SSA teachers have never been regularized.
“How far is this genuine and why the government enters into confrontation mode? Around hundred leaders from all three regions of the state reached Srinagar to participate in the sit-in protest. Our only demand to the state government is to fulfill all our legitimate demands without any further delay,” Wani added.
He said de-linking salaries from HRD Ministry to state sector will allow SSA employees to receive salaries from state budget without facing problems. He said besides de-linking of salaries, government is duty bound to bring them under the ambit of seventh pay commission.
Threatening intensify protests, Wani said SSA teachers will flood the roads in case the government again failed to resolve their long pending genuine issues after Eid.
