Series of protests against attempts to abrogate article 35A

SRINAGAR, Aug 2: Series of protests were held in parts of Srinagar against alleged attempts to abrogate Article 35 (A) of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday.
The call for protests was given by Kashmir Inc which claimed to have support of twenty business unions and civil society groups against alleged ‘onslaught’ on special status of the state guaranteed by Indian constitution.
Chanting pro-freedom slogans, hundreds of street vendors held a protest march from city centre Lal Chowk to Pratap Park here to protest the attempts to change demographic status of the Jammu and Kashmir by using legal tactics.
The protesting vendors who had carried placards in their hands which read “save disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir, safeguard Article 35A”, said they will not allow anyone to dilute the special status of the state.
Later state pensioners assembled at Pratap Park here and held sit-in protest against alleged onslaught on the Article 35A. They said people of Kashmir will fight any attempt aimed at abrogating Article tooth and nail.
Adil Shah a street vendor claimed that communal forces which moved to Supreme Court with a PIL challenging Article 35A wants to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere of the valley by attacking their rights guaranteed by constitution of the Union of India.
He said Kashmiri people will spill their blood on roads but won’t let anyone to snatch their rights “these moves are made to change the disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir. We are ready to be killed than to allow outsiders to settle in our state”
The protesters were later joined by the members of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) at Pratap Park who later held joint sit-in against PIL challenging constitutional validity of Article 35A.
The JKLF members’ led by their Chairman, Mohammad Yasin Malik shouted pro-freedom slogans demanding immediate dismissal of the writ petition by the Supreme Court of India.
Senior Trade Union leader and member of pensioners union, a Kashmiri Pandit Sampat Prakash claimed to have served simple imprisonment of one year in Tihar jail in 1968 said the Supreme Court has upheld legal authenticity of Article 35A twice in past.
“I challenged my detention in the light of Article 35A of the constitution in 1968. The Supreme Court upheld its constitutional authenticity hence no modification of the then constitutional bench is possible at present” said the aged KP.
He said people of Kashmir will hit streets in case the Supreme Court set aside its own rulings and annul Article 35A. “We will not tolerate any attack on our constitution which is life and pride”
A separate protest of Shehre Khaas Traders and Manufacturers Federation (SKTMF) was also held in old city this afternoon to protest attempts to abolish Article 35A.
The slogan shouting traders took out a peaceful protest rally from Khanqah-e-Moula to Bohrikadal area of old city against attempts to abrogate the constitutional Act.
Beopar Mandal Maharajgunj also staged peaceful protest against the RSS backed NGO for challenging Article 35A. They pledged to continue their protest until Supreme Court announce its verdict in favour of the state.
