MUMBAI, Aug 9: During Mr Stuart Welch’s time at Cranleigh High School he has seen numerous boys go on to play first-class cricket, including Stuart Meaker, Seren Waters and now Ollie Pope.
Undoubtedly, the 20-year-old Pope's inclusion in the squad for the Lord's Test against India will be closely monitored by his school coach Welch.
Speaking exclusively before the commencement of the first day's play, Stuart Welch said, "It was evident that Ollie was a good cricketer for his age when I first saw him and his batting was particularly strong square of the wicket. During his time at Cranleigh, he worked hard at developing his all round game but we maybe worked a little more on the technical side of his batting against the quicker bowling in his early years. During his final year he wanted to develop his game further in the middle overs against spin which included lots of sweep shots etc".
"Ollie's temperament has always been first-rate. He is deeply competitive but he's also a decent and humble young man, who has always found time for other people both on the sporting front and within the boarding house".
"It was clear in his final year at school that he would go on to bigger and brighter things. I didn’t think that it would happen as quickly though", Welch, the Director of cricket at the school, added.
"Ollie was a delightful pupil, very level headed and successful in all parts of school life. His academia always came first but his housemaster (Andy Logan) and Surrey's (Gareth Townsend) managed his overall program very well", Stuart Welch concluded.
