MUMBAI, Aug 13: Pakistani fast-bowler Sohail Tanvir is not the first international cricketer showing middle-finger gesture in the match. There have been instances of Virat Kohli, Ishant Sharma and Greg Chappell (coach), who too have sparked such controversy in the game.
Playing in the Caribbean Premier League (for Guyana Amazon Warrior), the 33-year-old left-arm medium pacer Tanvir was fined 15% of his match-fee for showing this gesture following Ben Cutting's wicket.
"I am not aware about the other players and can't comment on their gesture (towards fans) but honestly speaking my action "just happened unintentionally", Sohail Tanvir, said over telephone from the island.
"Honestly speaking there was no intention of teasing the Australian batsman (Ben Cutting)".
On the previous ball Cutting had hit Tanvir's delivery to a six.
In Western culture, the middle finger is considered to be an obscene hand gesture. "The T-20 matches are played with excitement and it just happened at the heat of the moment".
"I am a very cool and calm man. I hardly celebrate (on field) when wicket is taken off my ball. Have never entered into any such controversy in the past".
"I accepted my fault and there was no reason to appeal against the decision. There is nothing more to say on this incident", Tanvir added.
