SRINAGAR, Aug 14: Tension mounted at Lal Chowk here as some non local persons tried to hoist tri-colour there.
But before they can do so, they were thrashed by some locals. Two escaped while other was rescued by police.
Police has registered a case against some locals for beating the persons who tried to hoist the national flag.
Reports said three non-local youth from right wing political party emerged at Lal Chowk on Tuesday afternoon. As they took out tri-colour and tried to wave it, the passersby thrashed them. Two of them as per witnesses managed to escape from the spot; however, one political worker was manhandled by the locals. Timely action from police saved the activist from further thrashing.
The locals chanted slogans while police rushed to the spot and rescued one person.
The locals alleged that right wing political parties are sending their workers to disturb the peaceful atmosphere of Srinagar city. “Tomorrow is India’s Independence Day. There will be official functions where Indian tri-colour will be hoisted. What was the need to hoist tri-colour a day before Aug 15 celebrations. This is dirty politics being played by fanatic political parties of India,” told a passerby to media.
Meanwhile, police issued a statement on Tuesday evening that read: “Today afternoon few persons came to Ghanta Ghar in connection with some political activity.
The statement added that some miscreants assembled at the scene and created disturbances by criminally intimidating them.
“Police Station Maisuma has taken cognizance by registering FIR No 27/2018 under section 341,506 and 323 RPC and investigation has been initiated in the instant matter.”
