Only 16 wards out of 62 in 4 MCs of Anantnag witness polling

ANANTNAG, Sep 10: Out of 62 wards in four municipal committees that went to polls in second phase today in Anantnag and Kulgam districts of south Kashmir, voting was held for only 16 wards.
Four municipal committees including MC Yaripora, MC Frisal in Kulgam district and MC Bijbehara and municipal council Anantnag one of the largest local bodies of the valley were scheduled for polls today.
In Kulgam district no voting took place at any of the municipalities , MC Frisal and MC Yaripora as for the former there was not a single contestant for any of the 13 contestants while as for the later only three contestants for seven wards were in fray who were elected unopposed.
Similarly, in Bijbehara municipal committee in neighboring district Anantnag only six candidates had filed nominations while as 11 wards had no contestant. All the six contestants, three belonging to Congress and three to BJP were declared unopposed .
Official figures suggested that only 16 wards of MC Anantnag witnessed polling.
An official said that out of 25 wards 16 wards witnessed polling while as nine wards had only a single contestant who all were declared winners unopposed.
A total of 66 nominations had been filed for 25 wards of the municipal council out of which 58 were found valid.
Since nine candidates had no opponent, an official said, only 47 candidates were in contest today. The contestants were either independents and from Congress and BJP.
According to official figures, 16 wards that went to polling had a total electorate of 31277 out of whom only 356 turned up to vote. An official said that the overall voting recorded in all the 16 wards was 1.14 percent.
Election authorities had installed 44 voting machines out of whom, officials said, 23 remained untouched.
Khanabal polling station witnessed highest polling where 65 votes were polled followed by Lal Chowk where 46 votes were cast. However, at polling station Sarnal, only one vote was polled believed to be that of a candidate himself.
Despite the Joint Resistance Leadership calling for shutdown in only poll bound township, shutdown was observed in most of the townships of twin districts.
