Mattu, Hajam in race for post of mayor of SMC

SRINAGAR, Nov 2: The recently elected councillors Junaid Azim Mattu and Ghulam Rasool Hajam today filed nomination papers for election for the post of Srinagar municipal corporation (SMC).
Mattu resigned from National Conference before contesting the recent municipal polls as an independent candidate while Hajam is from Congress party.
The newly elected councillors of SMC will elect the mayor and deputy mayor on November 6.
For the post of deputy mayor Sheikh Imran and Mohammad Salaam Lone have filed their nomination papers.
Earlier, Congress said its elected councilor from Batamaloo Ghulam Rasool Hajjam will be party’s candidate for the post of mayor and party’s independent associate Sheikh Imran would be the candidate for deputy mayor.
State Congress president Ghulam Ahmad Mir said that Hajjam will win the election for Mayor’s post since he enjoys the support of majority of independent councillors. He said Imran will also emerge victorious.
He added that maximum number of independent councilors have extended their support to Congress.
