Family stages protest, seeks justice

ANANTNAG, Nov 3: Army on Saturday allegedly killed a mentally unsound man in Pahnoo village of southern Shopian district triggering protest by the family members and relatives of the deceased.
Rayees Ahmad Wani, son of Abdul Hamid Wani of Begam village of neighbouring Kulgam district, was shot dead by the army at around 3 am near the fence of the army camp.
A police official posted in Shopian said the deceased who was mentally unfit was passing by the army camp during the night hours.
A sentry manning the gate of the camp, on seeing him moving towards the camp fired several warning shots in the air to make him flee.
Despite the warning shots, police official said, the man did not stop and kept approaching the camp.
"As he reached close to the fence of the camp the sentry got suspicious and fired at him killing him on spot," the police official said.
Body of the deceased was later handed over to police, who, after legal and medical formalities handed over the same to his family for last rites.
The police official said that they have registered a case into the incident and investigations have been initiated.
Later the family members and relatives of the deceased after receiving his body held protests seeking action against the army men involved in the killing of their mentally unsound son.
The family members, witnesses said, held protests at Batpora Chowk on Shopian-Srinagar road along with the dead body demanding justice to their son.
"Rayees was specially abled since his childhood. On Friday evening he did not return home after which we reported his being missing with police. Besides reporting to local police we announced on social media including WhatsApp and Facebook about him. Police must investigate why our son was killed. We demand that his killers be punished," a local quoted the protesting family members as saying during the protest.
