MUMBAI, Nov 3: Nearly 11 months after the Sri Lankan team was first forced into wearing face masks against India at the Ferozsha Kotla Ground
to counter the Delhi pollution, Asanka Gurusinha, the then team manager has defended the Dinesh Chandimal-led team decision, which was highly criticized then.
Gurusinha was reminded the latest instance when the Mumbai-players including captain Dhavak Kulkurni, Sidhesh Lad and Aditya Tare on Thursday were seen wearing masks in the same city in the Ranji Trophy match against Railways.
"I don't say we are proved right but what was right then at that time was done", Gurusinha, now the Manager at the High Performance Unit, said exclusively over telephone from Australia. (Gurusinha is now in Australia and likely to return home later this week).
The Indian cricket board is criticized for hosting the matches in Delhi in these months though the Mumbai players wore masks because they were suffering from cold and cough before leaving for Delhi.
"Siddhesh has severe cough and cold and therefore he put a face mask", his father, Dinesh Lad, who is also a qualified coach and mentor to few India players like Rohit Sharma, Shardul Thakur etc., said.
Incidentally, the 26-year-old right handed middle order batsman Sidhesh Lad did not wear mask on the second day of the match on Friday. The overnight batsman missed his century by one run.
