Samba brave-heart cremated with military honour

JAMMU, Nov 11: Amid escalating tension on the Line of Control, in a third incident of similar nature, another army jawan on Sunday was killed in Pak sniper fire in Kalal area of Nowshera sector in Rajouri district.
Naik Gosavi Keshav Somgir, manning a forward post in Kalal area of Nowshera sector was critically injured due to fire from across the border this afternoon and later succumbed to his gunshot injuries.
Yesterday also, an army soldier was killed in Pak sniper fire on the Line of Control in Sunderbani sector of Rajouri district. Three jawans were also injured yesterday as Pakistani troops had resorted to repeated ceasefire violations on the Line of Control (LoC) in Pallanwalla and Sunderbani sectors in Jammu and Rajouri districts, prompting strong retaliation from the Indian side. Heavy exchange of fire has escalated tension on the LoC.
In the past three days, army incurred three fatal casualties due to sniping from across the border in Rajouri and Jammu districts. Four soldiers were also injured in ceasefire violations by Pakistan. While on November 9, an army porter was killed in Pak sniper fire in Akhnoor sector.
In the meanwhile, Samba brave-heart who was killed in sniping from across the border yesterday was cremated with full military honour in his native town.
Defence spokesperson Lt Col Devender Anand said, “Pakistan army resorted to an unprovoked ceasefire violation in Nowshera sector on the Line of Control (LoC) at about 1445 hours on November 11, 2018. In the incident, Naik Gosavi Keshav Somgir, an army soldier, was critically injured due to fire from across the border and succumbed to gunshot wound injuries.”
“Naik Gosavi Keshav Somgir, 29, belonged to village - Sri Rampur, tehsil - Sinnar, district - Nashik, Maharashtra and is survived by his wife Yashoda Gosavi. Naik Gosavi Keshav Somgir was a brave and sincere soldier. The nation will always remain indebted to him for the supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty,” said Lt Col Anand.
“Indian army has retaliated strongly and effectively on Pakistan army posts. The martyrdom of the Indian army soldier will not go in vain,” he added.
Samba brave-heart Rifleman Varun Kattal, who was killed in sniper fire by Pakistani troops along the Line of Control (LoC) in Sunderbani sector yesterday, was cremated today with full military honours in his home town Mawa-Rajpura.
Earlier in the day, a wreath-laying ceremony was held for Rifleman Varun Kattal at Akhnoor military station here where senior army officers and jawans paid floral tributes and laid wreath at his mortal remains. The 21-year-old soldier was killed while guarding the LoC in Sunderbani sector of Rajouri district Saturday. He was critically injured by a Pakistani sniper from across the border and later succumbed at a military hospital.
The body of the soldier was taken to his Mawa-Rajpura village, where hundreds of mourners joined his parents and other relatives to bid tearful adieu to him, the officials said.
Senior police and civil officers and politicians also joined the funeral procession to pay their tributes to the deceased. The body of the deceased was consigned to flames with full military honours amid slogan in praise for his sacrifice and the nation, they said.
Another Army soldier Surinder Thappa was injured in Pakistan firing at Pallanwalla sector in Akhnoor tehsil of Jammu yesterday. Troops evacuated him from the site of firing and shifted him to the Military Hospital for treatment. An army porter, Deepak Kumar son of Jeet Ram, a resident of village Bhalwal Bharath in Pargwal area of Akhnoor tehsil was killed in Pakistan firing on Friday in Khour area of Pallanwalla sector.
Two BSF jawans were injured in Pakistan firing at forward village of Mala in Sunderbani sector of Rajouri district Saturday evening. A BSF jawan was injured on Friday in Pakistan firing at Tarkundi in Bhimber Gali sector of Poonch district.
On October 21, three soldiers of Indian army were killed while two heavily-armed infiltrators, believed to be members of the Border Action Team (BAT) of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant outfit were killed in Sunderbani sector of Rajouri district. On November 6, a soldier was injured when he was hit by a sniper from across the border at Kalal in Nowshera sector of Rajouri, while a BSF jawan was injured in a separate incident of firing by Pakistan along the LoC in Manjakote area of Rajouri-Poonch sector on Friday.
The number of ceasefire violations this year by Pakistan has been the highest in the past eight years.
The first seven months of this year saw 52 deaths and 232 people getting injured in 1,435 ceasefire violations in the state.
