SRINAGAR, Dec 8: Two militants were killed and five security men injured in an ongoing encounter at Mujgund on Srinagar-Bandipora road on Saturday.
However, officials confirmed injury to only two security personnel. Clashes also occurred between the protestors and security forces in the affected area.
During the clashes protestors pelted stones and security men lobbed smoke shells.
Reports said the encounter started when a joint team of army, SOG, and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation at Ghat Mohalla at Mujgund following inputs about the presence of some militants.
As the operation was in progress, militants hiding in a house opened fire. This led to a fierce encounter.
A soldier and an SOG man were injured during the course of the gunfight and were shifted to a hospital, an official said. But unofficial reports said five security men were injured.
Quoting a senior police official, news agency GNS reported that two militant bodies were visible but were not retrieved so far.
“The firing has stopped as of now and searches are being launched to retrieve the bodies,” he said.
“There were inputs about the presence of three militants. While two militants have been killed, the fate of another one is unknown so far,” the officer said.
Reports said some houses suffered damage during the encounter. Locals alleged that four houses were blasted by security men during the encounter.
As the news regarding the encounter spread in the areas, people held demonstrations. They pelted stones on security men, who burst smoke shells to disperse them.
