3 militants killed in 18-hour long Mujgund encounter

Clashes at Hajin, internet suspended for 12 hours in Srinagar

SRINAGAR, Dec 9: With the killing of the third militant, the 18 hour long encounter between militants and security forces at Mujgund on the outskirts of Srinagar came to an end this morning.
The killed included a 14 year old militant Mudasir Ahmad Parray from Hajin. His killing led to clashes between protestors and security forces at Hajin.
The encounter had started in Mujgund yesterday.
The authorities this morning suspended the mobile internet service, saying that it was done as a precautionary measure. The service was, however, restored in the evening.
The security forces had killed two militants during the encounter at Mujgund last night. Five security men were also injured. During the encounter, clashes occurred between protestors and security forces near the encounter site. Protestors pelted stones and security forces burst smoke shells.
The third militant engaged the security men in firing last night and he was killed this morning. Five houses were also allegedly blasted by security forces during the exchange of fire.
The security forces ended the operation after the killing of third militant. Protest were held in the area after the operation ended.
Giving details of the whole operation, a police spokesman said that a search operation was launched yesterday jointly by police and security forces based on a credible input about the presence of militants at Mujgund area on Bandipora Road.
"During the search operation, the search party was fired upon by the hiding militants. The fire was retaliated leading to a gunfight. In the initial exchange of fire, one army jawan sustained injuries and was shifted to hospital for medical treatment," he said.
The spokesman added that in the ensuing encounter, three militants were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter.
They were identified as Mudasir Rashid Parray of Hajin Bandipora, Saqib Bilal Sheikh of Hajin Bandipora and from the material evidence collected, one militant is learnt to be a Pakistani identified as Ali, a police spokesman said.
The trio were affiliated with LeT.
Police spokesman said that Ali, according to police records, was involved in attacks on security establishments and civilians. He was involved in recruitments in Hajin and Sumbal areas of Bandipora.
In the initial exchange of fire, one army jawan was injured who is admitted in hospital. Three civilians also sustained injuries as the area was in open and the injured were shifted to hospital for medical treatment. They are stated to be stable.
The spokesman said that huge quantity of arms and ammunition including rifles were recovered from the site of encounter.
"Citizens are once again requested not to venture inside the encounter zone since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosives materials," police spokesman said
Reports said youth took to streets and held protests as the news of the killing of 14-year-old militant Mudasir Ahmad Parray reached his native Hajin area of Bandipora district.
The youth hurled stones on the forces deployed in the area to prevent protests.
The forces, according to witnesses, resorted to tear gas shelling and pellet firing to disperse the protesting youth.
