3 minors among 4 mauled by stray dogs

SRINAGAR, Jan 10: Amid cry over acute shortage of anti-rabies vaccine at valley hospitals, four persons including three minors were mauled by stray dogs at the main market, Boniyar in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district today.
Reports quoting witnesses said that stray dogs attacked four persons including three minors in Main Market Boniyar amongst one was later shifted to district hospital Baramulla for advanced treatment.
Witnesses said that the incident took place this afternoon which triggered anger amongst people against administration’s failure to check the growing dog menace in the area.
The injured, according to reports, were removed to Primary Health Centre (PHC) Boniyar for treatment while one was referred to District Hospital Baramulla for advanced treatment being critically mauled.
They said rest of the three injured were discharged from PHC Boniyar after necessary treatment.
The injured persons were identified as eight years old Afreen Bano from Batangi, Uzair Hassan and Reyan Khursheed (10) both residents of Boniyar and Abdul Hameed (52) from Bernate Boniyar.
“We received four persons including three minors in the hospital who were bitten by stray dogs in Boniyar Main Market, one of the critically injured was referred to DH Baramulla while three others were discharged after the treatment,” a medico in PHC Boniyar said.
Meanwhile, the locals accused the district administration for putting lives of the people especially minors in trouble because of the failure to curb growing dog menace in the area and elsewhere.
They alleged that dogs may surpass human population in the area in the near future in case the government does not take some firm measures to curb the menace.
“Today’s incident increased apprehensions of major incident among the people. Four persons were mauled by dogs in full gaze that too in day time, we time and again requested the concerned authorities to take some tangible steps against growing dog population. However, they seem to be in deep slumber,” Taj Din a Boniyar resident said.
