Grenade attack in Lal Chowk

SRINAGAR, Jan 18: Eight days ahead of Republic Day celebrations, militants carried out third grenade attack on security forces in Srinagar city on Friday.
Official sources said that the militants lobbed a hand grenade towards a CRPF vehicle near clock-tower at city centre Lal Chowk, twenty four hours after an ASI rank officer among three policemen, were injured in a similar attack near Zero Bridge area in Rajbagh on Thursday.
They said that the attack took place this afternoon when people were busy offering Friday prayers in mosques and there was no huge rush of people in otherwise busy market place. No loss of life was reported in the incident.
Sources said that the grenade which was aimed at targeting the CRPF vehicle missed the target and exploded with bang on road. A Maruti Alto-car bearing registration number JK01AH-0279 parked next to the vehicle suffered losses, which was later removed by the traffic police.
A senior police official said the recurrent grenade attacks by the militants are aimed at showing their presence in the Srinagar city.
He said the security would be further intensified in coming days and it would also be ensured that no such incidents take place which creates panic among masses.
“There is no loss of life or injury reported as the grenade missed the target, we will ensure that no such incident takes places. Security arrangements would be intensified in Srinagar city ahead of the Republic Day,” officials added.
Witnesses said that the grenade blast occurred at Lal Chowk area caused damage to some shops.
A police spokesman while confirming the grenade attack in Lal Chowk said soon after the attack police team led by senior’s officials reached to the spot to take stock of the situation.
He said a formal case has been also been registered in this regard and investigations set into motion.
