ANANTNAG, Jan 19: Aged and ailing Mozidin and his other family members were virtually starving in their dark one roomed muddy house in Charagpora village of Hapatnar in Anantnag district. They were shivering as they had no warm clothes to protect themselves from cold. The poor family's condition had worsened from last five months after their son was arrested in connection with some case and is detained somewhere in Jammu region.
However, on Wednesday, a group of young boys from Hatigam village of Bijbehara Khalid Rashid, Mohammad Iqbal, Farooq Ahmad, Sabzar Ahmad and Ghulam Ahmad Bhat after learning about the family's plight rushed to the village. The trio walked five kms on foot to reach the family as the road leading to the village was covered with snow.
In order to lend a helping hand to the family, the boys had taken some money along but on seeing the family's pitiable condition they realised that the money they had collected in their own circle was not enough to meet the needs of the family. On finding the aged couple and their little grandchildren starving and shivering in the nail biting chill, the boys went to a local shop, bought some eatables for the family and gave rest of the amount to them in cash.
The boys then went live on facebook with details of the family members and their living condition to the social media users, seeking monetary help for the poor family. A Kashmiri Pandit Ranjan Jotshi also reached out to the family and like the Muslim boys shared the family's condition and sufferings live on facebook.
The videos were viewed and shared widely on facebook by hundreds of users.
Thanks to the power of social media, people whole-heartedly helped the family and transferred the money into the family's account that had also been shared in the video.
In four days, the family's account was credited with over 10 lakh rupees.
"We had collected some amount in a friend circle and had decided to give it to the poor family. But we reached there and we found the family in agony. They had not eaten for five days. The little kids were shivering as they were in rags. There were no quilts or blankets. So we decided to use social media to seek help for the family," said Khalid Rashid, one of the youth who was part of the group.
The people, he said, generously donated to help the family and in just four days over ten lakh rupees were credited into the family's account.
"The way people responded to our appeal for help to the family not only proved that the humanity in Kashmir is still alive but also proved how powerful is the social media," Khalid said.
After the bank officials informed this group of youth about how the people have contributed to help the family, they again went to the village on Saturday to inform the family.
In a fresh video message, the aged couple thanked the people for helping them and appealed them to help other such poor families.
"We now have everything including eatables, bedding and clothes. Now that people have come to our help we appeal to them to stop now and help other such families," Mozidin and his visibly weak wife are heard saying in the fresh video.
