Search Operation in Lal Chowk

SRINAGAR, Jan 19: Government forces today launched search operation in city centre Lal Chowk, a day after militants carried out grenade attack aimed at targeting paramilitary CRPF mobile bunker in the busy market place yesterday.
Although police said it was a routine exercise ahead of Republic Day celebration, however witnesses said that the joint team of Police and CRPF conducted door to door searches in the areas situated around Lal Chowk.
Witnesses said that contingents of police and paramilitary CRPF with sophisticated armored vehicles appeared in Lal Chowk and started frisking pedestrians creating panic among people.
They said that drones were also pressed into service to conduct aerial survey of the area wherein two grenade attacks occurred in past two weeks.
It is pertinent to mention that militants past week attacked a CRPF installation with hand grenade at Palladium Cinema while similar attack was followed near clock tower on Thursday which caused damage to private vehicle parked next to the CRPF mobile bunker.
Day before yesterday’s attack in Lal Chowk, militants lobbed a grenade on a police party manning traffic near Zero-Bridge at Rajbagh leaving three policeman including an Assistant Sub-Inspector rank officer injured.
Jaish-e-Muhammad militant outfit according to local news gathering agency has claimed the responsibility of recurrent grenade attacks in the city.
Sher-i-Kashmir International Cricket Stadium (SKICS), the venue for Republic Day celebrations is less than half a kilometer away from the places where militants carried grenade attack on government forces.
Witnesses said that the joint team of forces conducted door to door searches in Court Road area. Later forces carried flag march up to Regal Chowk.
