Srinagar-Jammu highway closed for 2nd day

SRINAGAR, Jan 22: While light to moderate snowfall occurred in the upper reaches last night, the weather conditions started improving from today.
The 300-km long Jammu-Srinagar highway continued to remain blocked for the second consecutive day today.
"Traffic movement disrupted continuously for 2 days due to rain, shooting stones/landslides/snowfall on Jammu Srinagar NHW," wrote the traffic police on twitter.
It added that, "therefore tomorrow on 23.01.2019, subject to fair weather/clearance of road only stranded vehicles shall be allowed towards their destination."
Regarding the Mughal Road and Srinagar-Kargil road, the traffic police said the two roads are continuously closed due to snow accumulation.
Earlier, an official said traffic was suspended on Srinagar-Jammu highway today after a snow avalanche blocked Jawahar tunnel in Qazigund are of south Kashmir.
He added that the avalanche blocked the both tubes of the tunnel from Qazigund side, forcing the authorities to suspend the traffic movement on the highway.
He said that a rescue operation was launched in the area. There was no immediate report of any loss of life or injuries.
The area has been witnessing heavy snowfall from past several days.
Light to moderate snowfall occurred in the upper reaches last night. However, the day witnessed improvement in weather conditions. Met predicted further improvement from tomorrow onwards.
"The western disturbance, active over Jammu and Kashmir, has resulted in rains in the Jammu division and the snowfall in the valley over the past 24 hours, since Monday. The system is likely to weaken from Tuesday evening and we are expecting gradual improvement from tomorrow onwards," a Met official said.
Srinagar recorded minus 0.2 degrees Celsius while Pahalgam and Gulmarg recorded minus 0.2 and minus 4 degrees, respectively.
Kargil was coldest at minus 12.2, Drass town of Ladakh recorded minus 6.8, while Leh was warmer at 2.8 degrees Celsius.
Jammu city was at 8.7, Katra 6, Batote minus 2.1, Banihal minus 0.1 and Bhaderwah was at minus 0.2.
