CUJ students resume protest against bus-fare hike

JAMMU, Feb 5: The students of Central University of Jammu (CUJ) Tuesday evening yet again staged a massive protest demonstration against imposition of, what they said, “mid-term bus-fare.” The protest continued till late this evening.
The students were alleging that the university administration had imposed the bus-fare to the tune of Rs 1000 per month, in violation of University Grants Commission (UGC) rules, restricting each university from increasing the fee structure till 2020.
For the last over one month the students have been protesting against the imposition of bus-fare, which they said was “illegal” as they had already paid the same during their admission.
On Tuesday morning, all the students of University assembled outside the main building and started protest demonstration, after which the Dean Students Welfare and other staff members called a meeting of students at the auditorium.
“We showed them UGC rules, which clearly mentioned that no university can raise their fee till 2020 but they have been violating the UGC guidelines by imposing mid-term fee, which most of the students cannot afford,” a student said and also projected before the administration that UGC also mentioned
that they would also pay extra funds to the universities, established in rural areas.
“If UGC is ready to pay them funds, it is the incompetency of CUJ administration that they have failed to persuasively take up their matter,” the students said, adding that to hide their incompetency they were blaming union government. “As the administration failed to give satisfactory reply to the students, we boycotted the meeting,” the students informed. The students once again started protest demonstration during off hours.
“Some outsiders who are illegally accessing the library openly threatened to kill some students and also manhandled the students in front of the Dean Student Welfare and other officials but they remained silent,” the protesters said. They also alleged that some of University officials also “manhandled the protesters.”
None from the university administration including the Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar, was available for comment despite repeated attempts.
