9 arrested during night raids in twin Pulwama villages

CASO ends in Shopian village

ANANTNAG, Jan 5: Government forces Monday night rounded up at least nine youth in twin villages of southern Pulwama district where as cordon and search operation launched by the forces in Shopian village ended without any success.
Government forces, local sources said, arrived in Arigam and Arihal villages in the dead of night and raided the houses of several youth. During the night raids, they said, Special Operations Group (SOG) men picked up at least nine youth for their alleged involvement in stone throwing.
Sources said eight youth were picked up from Arigam village while as one youth was detained from Arihal.
Locals complained that the overnight raids by the forces on the houses of youth caused harassment and inconvenience to the family members.
Some of the arrested youth were identified as Bilal Ahmad Ganai, Showkat Ahmad Rather, Sabzar Ahmad Lone and Tariq Ahmad Dad.
A police official confirmed the detention of youth but added that they were involved in various stone throwing incidents.
"They are being questioned for their role in stone throwing protests. We have evidence of their involvement in stone throwing protests," a police official said.
Meanwhile government forces early Tuesday morning launched a cordon and search operation in Sugan village of Shopian district following inputs about the presence of militants.
Local sources said that the forces carried out house to house searches in a particular locality of the village to locate the militants who they believed were hiding in the village.
However, they said, after failing to establish contact with the militants forces later called off the search operation.
