7 cops among 11 injured in Lal Chowk grenade attack

SRINAGAR, Feb 10: Eleven persons including four policemen, three CRPF personnel and four civilians were injured when militants attacked a CRPF camp at Pallaidium Cinema building at Lal Chowk with a grenade this evening.
The blast occurred at around 6.45 PM and the CRPF men from 132 battalion in Pallaidium Cinema were the target, police said.
Reports said the militants hurled the grenade which exploded with a big bang causing injuries to 11 persons. The blast caused panic in the area with people running helter-skelter.
After a while police and security forces besides some pedestrians rushed towards the affected area and removed the injured to hospital. The security men threw a cordon around the blast site.
This is the second grenade attack there in recent past.
The attack was carried one day after the 6th death anniversary of Mohammad Afzal Guru and one day before the 35th death anniversary of Mohammad Maqbool Butt.
Security forces are on a high alert in sensitive parts of the city since yesterday and additional deployment of security forces has been made as a precautionary measure.
Giving details of todays attack, a police spokesman said, “Officers attended the crime spot and found that four cops, three CRPF personnel and four civilians were injured in the attack. The injured civilians have been identified as Humaira of Hairwan, Abdul Qayoom of Mandibal Nowshehra, Taliba Gulshan of Dalgate and Shadab Shah, resident of Nishat."
The injured policemen were identified as Ashiq Ahmed, Abid Ahmed, Mohammad Shafi, and Nasir Ahmed .The injured CRPF men were identified as ASI R Munaswami, constable Vishal and constable Davinder.
“The injured have been shifted to the hospitals for the treatment of their injuries. They are stated to be stable,” said the police spokesman. Police has registered a case in this regard and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of the incident, he added.
