NEW DELHI, Feb 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday promised that the “sacrifices” of the jawans at Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama “will not go in vain.”
Condemning the attack on a CRPF convoy in which nearly 40 men died, Modi tweeted, “The entire nation stands shoulder to shoulder with the families of the brave martyrs. May the injured recover quickly.”
In a series of tweets, PM said, "Attack on CRPF personnel in Pulwama is despicable. I strongly condemn this dastardly attack. The sacrifices of our brave security personnel shall not go in vain.”
The Prime Minister, who had gone to Uttarakhand for a rally ahead of the coming national elections, is heading for Delhi. Modi further added that he had spoken to Home Minister Rajnath Singh to take stock of the situation in Kashmir.
The scale of today's attack is far larger than the one in Uri more than two years ago, when four terrorists struck at an army base, killing 19 soldiers. Eleven days later, the army had retaliated with surgical strikes on terror launch pads across the Line of Control, destroying several installations.
The terrorists had struck this afternoon, driving a vehicle laden with 350 kg of explosives into a CRPF convoy. The Scorpio struck one bus, which was carrying around 40 personnel. The resulting blast struck other vehicles close by. Forty others are battling for their lives, 13 of them are critical.
At least 40 CRPF jawans died so far in the worst terror attack on the armed forces in the past few years. Several others, who were part of the 50-vehicle CRPF convoy, remain critical and are undergoing treatment at local hospitals. More than 2,500 Central Reserve Police Force personnel, many of them returning from leave to rejoin duty in the Valley, were travelling in the convoy of over 70 vehicles when they were ambushed on the Srinagar-Jammu highway in Awantipora.
Police said the terrorist driving the suicide vehicle was Adil Ahmed Dar from Kakapora in Pulwama who joined the Jaish-e-Mohammed in 2018.
