Thrashing of youth in Chandigarh; Clashes, shutdown in Anantnag

SRINAGAR, Feb 23: A shutdown was today observed at Lal Chowk in Anantnag and some old parts of the town against thrashing of a local youth in Chandigarh.
Clashes also occurred at Lal Chowk between protestors and police. The protestors pelted stones and cops burst smoke shells.
Reports said that Mohammed Vikas Malik, a resident of Anantnag town, who is pursuing Bachelors in Technology (B. Tech) from a college in Mohali was reportedly thrashed by a mob yesterday.
In Anantnag, youth took to streets in Lal Chowk this morning and staged protests against the thrashing of Vikas.
They said the police tried to pacify the protesters, but they did not relent, leading to clashes.
The protesting youth pelted stones on the forces who in turn lobbed tear shells.
