KISHTWAR, Mar 9: A policeman, whose service rifle was reportedly snatched by suspected militants from his rented accommodation in Kishtwar last night, was placed under suspension on Saturday even as a massive search operation was on to arrest the culprits and recover the weapon.
Police officials informed that Daleep Kumar, who was posted as Personal Security Officer (PSO) of District Development Commissioner, Kishtwar, Angrez Singh Rana, was reportedly overpowered by the gunmen who intruded into his residence at Asrarabad near Shaheedi Mazar in the town late Friday night and decamped with his AK-47 rifle and a mobile.
“The policeman has been placed under suspension and is being questioned. His mobile phone was recovered from an open area during the search operation," Senior Superintendent of Police, Kishtwar told reporters. He said the search operation was launched immediately after the receipt of the information about the incident and was still going on. “No one was arrested or detained in connection with the incident so far. We are on the job to crack the case,” he added.
The policeman claimed that the gunmen threatened him and his family members before fleeing the scene with his service rifle and the mobile, he said.
The incident created panic in the Kishtwar town which has yet to come out of the tragic killings of BJP leader Anil Parihar and his brother Ajeet Parihar as the perpetrators involved behind the brutal killings were still at large even after more than 4 months.
Initially two conflicting reports emerged about the incident of snatching of PSO’s rifle. As per initial reports, it was believed that some unidentified person snatched the weapon from the cop while he was on his way to private accommodation in Ward No. 9 of Kishtwar Municipality near Girls Higher Secondary School Kishtwar between 9.50 PM to 10 PM while another report suggested that he (Daleep) had kept the weapon in his room and while returning, he found the weapon missing.
