WGAJK kick starts Dakh Divisional ski championship at Drass

JAMMU, Mar 17: The District Winter Games Association Drass kick started it’s first-ever Ladakh Divisional Ski Championship at Drass today.
The SSP Kargil Vinod Kumar was chief guest and SDM, Drass was guest of honour on the Inaugural function. The Championship is orgasnised under the auspices of Winter Games Association of J&K, Srinagar and J&K State Sports Council with active support of J&K Youth Services and Sports, Indian Army and J&K Police, District Kargil.
On the inaugural day competitions were held in Giant Slalom (Boys and Girls) on KBS ski slopes. The participants were awarded the merit and participation certificates by the Chief Guest.
In his speech Mohammad Amin informed that with the personal efforts of President WGAJK Mohammad Abbas Wani and General Secretary WGAJK Muhammad Yusuf it was possible to hold this maiden championship in this neglected region.
He said that Ladakh region is famous for ice skating events but the snow sports were not popular here, though Drass remains snow bound for nearly 6 months. He said that in future the association would organise training camps here for the novices.
He stressed the need of raising ski equipment in Kargil District so that more people could be trained to this sport. He said the Tourism Deptt must set up Ski Shops here like other ski resorts of the state He conveyed his gratitude to Indian Army, Distt Police, LHDC and other organizations for extending their support to make the endeavor a grant success. Without their support it might have been possible to hold this historical championship. He also conveyed his thanks to Shamim Ahmad of Youth Services and Riz Mir for providing their technical expertise.
The General Secretary WGAJK Muhammad Yusuf said that the main aim for going through this project was inculcate a spirit of snow sports among the denizens of Kargil district and to promote Kargil district as a snow ski destination.. He said that the area has great scope for ski-mountaineering. He further said that the efforts of WGAJK are afoot to promote Ski and Snowboarding far and wide in the state. He said the association is also holding first ever South Kashmir Ski championship from 18th of this month at Pahalgam.
