Cop, civilian electrocuted; 6 hurt in Mendhar

MENDHAR, Apr 23: Two persons, including a police Constable, were electrocuted to death on Tuesday after their houses were hit by a surge of high-voltage current due to a snag in the electricity transformer in their village in Mendhar in Poonch district, a police official said.
Six other persons also sustained injuries while trying to rescue the duo.
Locals told KTNS said a constable (Follower) in Jammu and Kashmir Police identified as Faiz, 40, son of Mohammed Sharif and his neighbor, a civilian Mohammed Shabir, 38, son of Abdul Rahim died on spot after they came in touch with live wire, following an incident of short circuit in 33KV transformer at Chungan Chroon area of Mendhar in Poonch district early Tuesday morning.
SHO Mendhar Sajjad Mir also confirmed to KTNS the death of two people including a cop and injury to six others when they came in touch with live wire due to short circuit in a transformer at around 3.00 AM. Mir later rushed to the spot to assess the situation. Six others, however, suffered minor injuries.
Block Medical Officer Mendhar Dr Parvaiz Ahmed Khan deputed medical teams along with two ambulances and doctors on spot. The injured were treated on spot. One injured was shifted to Government Sub District Hospital Mendhar while five were given first aid on spot by the doctors’ team.
Police officials said that almost every house in the village was affected by the incident which caused damage to the electronic appliances and electricity wires. The electricity transformer supplying power to the village was also damaged. Senior police and Power Development Department (PDD) officials also reached to the affected village to ascertain the cause of the accident.
