6 injured in Nowhatta clashes, dozens detained

SRINAGAR, May 10: At least six persons received pellet injuries after massive cashes broke out between youth and government forces outside historic Jamia Masjid at Nowhatta area in old city post Friday prayers.
Witnesses said the police also allegedly arrested dozens of youth in Nowhatta area after massive clashes were witnessed in the area. Police witnesses said also fired some shots in air to bring the situation under control.
Earlier, police fired pellets and tear smoke shells to disperse the youth who assembled outside Jamia compound as soon as Friday congregational prayers culminated at historic mosque triggering massive clashes between the two sides.
Amid pro freedom sloganeering when the youth assembled at Jamia market, police deployed there swung into action and fired pellets and dozens of tear smoke canisters to disperse them. They said that as many as six youth suffered injuries in police action.
The shopkeepers at Jamia market pulled shutters of their shops down and ran helter-skelter for safety. Clashes, reports said, continued for at least an hour in the area.
Protesters as per reports were demonstrating against arrest of separatist leaders including JKLF Chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik and others.
Locals said the police action against protesting youth created total chaos and confusion in the area prompting traders to suspend their business.
Clashes were going on at various places in old city when reports last came in.
A senior police official said clashes broke out at Nowhatta area after youth pelted stones on police and paramilitary troopers after Friday prayers prompting them to fire tear smoke shells in defense. He, however, expressed ignorance about the arrest of youth in the area.
