Shutdown in Sopore on 2nd day over killing of militant

SRINAGAR, May 11: A shutdown was observed for second consecutive day today in Sopore over the killing of a local militant in an encounter with security forces at Shopian yesterday.
Reports said that shops and other businesses establishments remained closed and transport was off the roads in Sopore town and adjoining areas.
People from various areas of Sopore visited the residence of the slain militant to offer condolences.
Sources said that security forces were deployed in strength in and around the area.
Ishfaq Ahmad Sofi, a resident of Model Town, Sopore was killed in a gunfight with the security forces yesterday.
Earlier, authorities had decided to suspend class work in Government Degree College Sopore, Higher Secondary School Boys and Higher Secondary School Girls, Sopore today as a precautionary measure.
Ishfaq Sofi alias Umar belonged to Model Town, Sopore. Ishfaq, according to officials, had joined militant ranks in 2015 and was associated with Hizb-ul-Mijahideen. They said after remaining active for some time he was arrested and later released on bail.
In 2018, they said, Ishfaq again got recycled into militancy. Police spokesman in a statement said that the slain was involved in several attacks on security establishments even in Srinagar. Some reports suggested that after recycling into militancy Ishfaq was associated with ISJK. However, police in its statement did not mention his association with the outfit.
