S Kashmir transporters call for strike against toll tax

ANANTNAG, May 12: South Kashmir Transporters Association today called for a strike on May 14 against the collection of toll by National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).
President Sumo and Tempo Travellers Association, Bilal Ahmad Dar on Sunday announced that there will be a complete on May 14 by the transporters across south Kashmir.
"A meeting of south Kashmir transporters association was held today in which members of different transport associations of the region participated. In the meeting it was unanimously decided to call for a one-day strike on May 14 against the levying of toll on locals," he said.
After the completion of four-laning of National highway from Qazigund to Srinagar by the Hyderabad based construction firm the NHAI started collecting toll tax at toll post Kachkoot near Sangam. Though the governor Satya Paul Malik following the protests by local transporters few days back had said that the locals will be exempted from the toll but the NHAI continues to collect toll from even the locals.
Dar told reporters that in view of the Holy month of Ramadan the called for only one day strike to avoid inconvenience to the people.
"But if the government fails to do away with the levying of tax on locals we will be left with no option but to go on an indefinite strike," President South Kashmir Sumo Union said.
He said that the transporters in Kashmir are earning their livelihood under tough circumstances from the last 39 years.
