Clashes in Magam, as protests continue against minor’s rape

Demonstrations continue in Sumbal

SRINAGAR, May 12: Clashes occurred between protestors and security forces after protests at Magam today against the rape of a three-year old girl in Sumbal of Bandipora district.
Reports said that the protestors were demanding severe punishment to guilty. Large number of people assembled at Magam and started holding demonstrations. They also blocked the road.
The security forces and protestors clashed after some time. The protestors pelted stones and security-men burst smoke shells and resorted to lathi-charge.
Reinforcement was rushed to the affected area to bring the situation under control. Normal life was affected in the area. Shops and other business establishments were closed and transport also went off the roads.
Meanwhile, protests continued in Sumbal of Bandipora district against the rape of a three-year old girl.
The girl was raped some days back. Police has arrested the accused, who is a resident of Malikpora Trigam Sumbal. Police has also formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for speedy investigations into the case.
Today also massive protests were held at Sumbal and the protestors were demanding severe punishment to guilty. They were also agitated over some persons trying to project the accused as minor. However, police said that the date of birth certificate of the accused uploaded on social media claiming the accused to be minor is fake. Police asserted that it is treating the accused as major.
Reports said that today people from various localities of Sumbal including Shilvat, Dangerpora, Nowgam, Inderkoot, Gadkhod, Shahtulpora and Shadipora took out protest marches, demanding an exemplary punishment to the guilty.
The protestors blocked Bandipora-Srinagar road near Sumbal bridge and disrupted traffic movement for some time. The protestors later marched towards main market Sumbal.
Deputy Commissioner, Bandipora, Shahbaz Ahmad Mirza and SSP Bandipora, Rahul Malik visited the spot and assured the protestors that the investigation into the case would be carried out on fast track basis. The protestors later dispersed off peacefully.
Deputy Commissioner in a tweet said: “The heinous crime of rape of a minor in Shadipora Bandipora is under investigation with full vigour and we assure that perpetrator of the crime will be brought to justice.”
“We appeal to the public to stay calm and not pay heed to any rumours,” he tweeted.
SSP Bandipora, Rahul Malik said the SIT comprising SDPO Sumbal, SHO Sumbal and Sr. PO has been constituted to investigate the entire case.
He also said the police are treating the accused as major and the certificate that was uploaded on social media regarding the age of the accused was fake.
He also appealed public not to pay heed to any rumours. “We urge the public not to pay any heed to rumours and have faith on police,” he said.
“The age confirmation of the accused will be determined on the basis of scientific medical test to be conducted by a team of senior doctors,” a police official said.
