ANANTNAG, May 23: The family members and relatives of Irfan Manzoor Bhat, who was killed along with his another militant associate on Thursday alleged that the frequent detentions and harassment forced their son to pick up gun.
Irfan, the native of Paneeva village of Kulgam who was pursuing graduation before joining militant ranks went missing from his home last month to evade the arrest by forces. He, however, could not survive for more than 25 days.
He along with his another associate, Zahid Ahmad Mantoo of Shopian Feeripora was killed in a gunfight with forces in Gopalpora village of Kulgam after being trapped under the cordon laid by the joint team of forces around the village.
Though the father of the slain, Manzoor Ahmad was inconsolable over the killing of his militant son and unable to talk, however some of his relatives and neighbors alleged the frequent detentions and harassment by forces left Irfan with no option but to take the extreme step.
"Irfan no doubt would participate in protests but was not remotely linked to militancy. For nearly two years he was facing both mental and physical agonies at the hands of forces which would frequently detain and harass him in custody," said one of his close relatives.
Before joining militant ranks, his another relative said, police had launched a major hunt for him.
"To evade one more arrest and face beating in custody he decided to pick up gun and die. After the custodial death of Rizwan Pandit, he had told some boys that he too will be killed the same way if arrested again," the relative said.
