ANANTNAG, June 23: Four militants believed to be affiliated with Ansar Gazwat-ul-Hind were killed in an encounter with security forces in southern Shopian district today.
The slain militants were identified as Showkat Ahmad alias Arshid of Chandpora Rajpora, Azad Ahmad Khanday alias Moulvi of Bamnoo Pulwama, Suhail Yusuf of Brethipora Shopian and Rafi Hassan Mir of Kral Chak Shopian.
The gunfight raged in Daramdora area of Keegam Shopian at the crack of dawn after a joint team of counter insurgent forces threw a ring of cordon around the area following credible intelligence inputs about the presence of militants.
Police officials said as the forces started carrying out searches, militants hiding in the orchards opened fire. The forces retaliated the fire triggering off gunfight.
After the exchange of fire for several hours, the gunfight later ended with the killing of four militants.
The bodies of the slain militants were later retrieved from the encounter site and handed over to their families for last rites.
Though police did not divulge any details about the group affiliation of the slain, however, some reports suggested the slain were associated with Al-Qaeda affiliate, AGH. One of the slain, Showkat Ahmad, according to officials, was active for four years while three of his associates had joined militant ranks only few months ago.
Meanwhile, thousands of people participated in the funeral prayers of slain militants in their native villages.
Reports said that huge number of people, amid internet shutdown, reached the native places of the slain to join their funeral prayers.
Meanwhile, authorities snapped internet services in Shopian district to maintain law and order following the killing of militants.
