MUMBAI, July 6: Cricket West Indies chairman Ricky Skerritt was not surprised when he saw Universe Boss Chris Gayle took a stunning catch of Afghanistan batsman Rahmat Shah (at Leeds on July 4) and along with the bowler Carlos Brathwaite( celebrated it by doing a few push ups.
Speaking exclusively over telephone from the Caribbean Island, Skerritt said, "West Indian players enjoy playing cricket and entertaining their fans. Chris (Gayle) has competed in five World Cups, and it was good to see him still making an impact on the result, as a bowler. He will always be remembered fondly, as his performance data speaks for itself. ".
Interestingly, push ups by cricketers on the field is rare but not new.
In 2016, entire Pakistan team did so against England after winning the Test match at the Lord's.
"A few, like (Sheldon) Cottrell, have their own special way of celebrating individual achievements".
"Spotting, Molding and Building young talent is an investment process that West Indies has not carried out very well in the past. That is being fixed so we can become a winning team by the next World Cup", added Skerritt.
In the meantime, Phil Simmons, who has been out as a coach for the Afghanistan team may apply for the coaching role with the Windies team.
"Coaching position will be opened for competitive applications in September", Skerritt signed off.
Afghanistan players have gifted an autographed shirt to their outgoing coach.
