Jammu loses its illustrious son in Prof Khairat Mohammed

JAMMU, Jul 7: The son of the soil Prof Khairat Mohammed Ibn-e-Rasa passed away on Saturday in Lahore.
Son of legendary Urdu and Kashmiri poet Rasa Javedani, Prof Khairat was born at Bhaderwah on October 5, 1926.He did his schooling from Government Higher Secondary School Boys Bhaderwah and B Sc from GGM Science College Jammu. He did his M Sc in Chemistry from Aligarh Muslim University and after partition he went to Pakistan from where he proceeded to Brown University America for further studies where he did his Ph D in 1959.
Prof Khairat served as first Vice Chancellor of Multan University Pakistan. He also served as the Vice Chancellor of Punjab University Lahore. After retirement he was given the task of setting up various universities in Pakistan. He also served as Vice-Chancellor Al-Khair University in Pakistan Administered Kashmir (PAK). Prof Khairat has been awarded the highest Pakistani civilian award, “Sitara-e-Imtiaz” by the Government of Pakistan.
A recipient of Iqbal Centenary Medal from Government of Pakistan and Potter Prize from Brown University USA, he would be considered a close associate of the former Prime Minister of Pakistan Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and former President of Pakistan Zia-ul-Haq. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was instrumental in bringing him back from America and appointed him the first Vice Chancellor of Multan University Pakistan.
Later Gen Zia-ul-Haq made him the Vice Chancellor of Punjab University, Lahore. His field of research was Organic Chemistry. He served as Deputy Director General Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) from 1984 to 1991.
He also served as Patron in Chief of Pakistan Institute of Chemists. He wrote three dozens of books on Organic Chemistry. His books are taught in different syllabi of Pakistan universities.
His death has been widely condoled in the educational, literary and political circles of Pakistan as well as Jammu and Kashmir.
He is survived by his three sons. His Nimaz e Jinaza was performed in Jamia Masjid Lahore University where he was laid to rest.
