Hit by ball, teenage cricketer dies in Anantnag

ANANTNAG, July 11: A 19-year-old cricketer died on Wednesday after being hit by the ball during a cricket match in this southern district.
Jahangir Ahmad War, an 11th class student from Goshbugh Pattan died on the spot after a ball hit him during a cricket match that was being played between Baramulla and Budgam teams at sports stadium in Nanil village.
An official of the youth sports and services department, Anantnag, said the cricketer was hit by the ball after he tried to play a pull shot.
"As soon as the ball hit him, he fell unconscious. He was immediately taken to nearby Mattan hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival," the official said.
He said the cricketer was equipped with all the safety gears including the helmet.
Pertinently the inter-district Under-17 and Under-19 cricket tournaments are being organised by the youth services and sports department. The matches of both the tournaments are being played at various sports stadiums of Anantnag district.
Director General, youth services and sports, Dr Saleem-ul-Rehman described the death of young cricketer as most unfortunate.
"It is a very unfortunate incident. The department will try to help and assist his family in every possible way," the DG said.
He said that he will also send a proposal to the government to name the Under-19 cricket tournaments being played every year after this young cricketer.
"I am hopeful that the ‘Under-19 cricket tournament’ will be named as Jahangir cricket tournament forever. Naming the tournament after the deceased young cricketer will be the best tribute to him," he said.
