KEG backed alliance sweeps KPC polls, loses president post by 1 vote

SRINAGAR, July 15: The Kashmir Editors Guild (KEG) backed alliance today swept the polls for Kashmir Press Club (KPC) but lost the post of president by a margin of one vote.
The first election for various posts of KPC also known as Aiwaan-e-Sahafat since its establishment two years back were held here today amid lot of enthusiasm among the media fraternity.
Prominent TV journalist, Shuja-ul-Haq, was elected president of KPC. He defeated his nearest rival, Haroon Rashid, Editor of Nida-i-Mashriq and KEG alliance backed candidate by a narrow margin of one vote. Shuja obtained 92 votes and Haroon 91.
For rest of the posts KEG backed alliance made a clean sweep.
Nearly 250 journalists affiliated with the KPC were eligible to vote in the first-ever elections for the club established two years back.
The members voted for candidates contesting for 11 posts, including one each of president, vice-president, general secretary, treasurer and seven of executive members.
There were three contestants each for the posts of president, vice-president and general secretary and two contestants for the post of treasurer. Twenty journalists were in the race for the seven executive member posts.
Moazam Mohammad scored 130 votes to win the post of vice president while his nearest rival Tajamul Islam got only 75.
Ishfaq Ahmad Tantry polled 102 for the post of general secretary and his nearest rival was Riyaz Malik with 95 votes.
Post of treasurer went to prominent photo journalist Farooq Javed who got 178 votes against just 44 of his opponent Arshid Rasool.
Habib Naqash, Arshad Hussain, Shafat Kira, Altaf Baba, Auqib Javed, Nisar Ahmad and Gowhar Geelani were declared elected as executive members.
