Restrictions in J&K

NEW DELHI, Aug 8: The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to accord urgent hearing to a petition filed by activist Tehseen Poonawalla seeking immediate withdrawal of prohibitory orders and restrictions in Jammu and Kashmir imposed in view of abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution.
The matter was mentioned before a Bench headed by Justice NV Ramana for urgent listing and hearing. But the Bench advised the petitioner’s counsel to place it before Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi. In his petition, Poonawalla has also demanded restoration of phone, internet and TV news services. He said the restrictions violated basic freedoms under Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution.
The petitioner demanded that former chief ministers Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti be released from house arrest. He requested the top court to direct the government to set up a judicial commission to ascertain the ground situation.
