Heavy rush of Eid shoppers in Kargil, situation peaceful

KARGIL, Aug 10: After observing complete shutdown for two days, Kargil region Saturday witnessed heavy rush in the shops and other business establishments with people thronging enthusiastically for Eid-u-Azha shopping.
The government and private offices were found functioning normally as per routine practice while public transport and private vehicles were also seen plying on the highways as well as the internal roads as usual. Banks, colleges and schools were also functioning normally.
The shutdown was called off on Friday evening by the Joint Action Committee which announced suspension of strike call till Eid celebrations.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner Kargil Baseer Ul Haq Choudhary in a statement said that all arrangements have been put in place to ensure the requirements of people relating to ration, medicines and other essentials are met fully during the celebration of Eid-ul-Azha
“People are generally happy with the recent developments and demand for more development, employment opportunities, development of tourism and enhanced connectivity,” maintained the DC adding that the people were also optimistic that direct contact with the central government would have greater advantages and would usher in a mechanism of swift and responsive governance.
Earlier yesterday morning, a high-level state government delegation headed by Home Secretary Shaleen Kabra visited Kargil and met the JAC members headed by Sheikh Nazir ul Mehdi and then Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil, Chairman-cum-CEC, Feroz Khan. The JAC members said they were for united state and the Union Territory was never their demand. They asked the officials to arrange their meeting with the representatives of the Central government. The delegation assured the JAC that their demands would be taken up with the government.
