MUMBAI, Aug 10: "Enjoy the record while it lasts...", the above congratulatory message from the former World Cup record holder Arul Suppiah has reached to the Leicestershire captain Colin Ackermann, who set a new T20 world record with bowling figures of 7-18.
"I am very proud to have held this record for a while. If anything, I gave hope to the bowlers", the 35-year-old Malaysia-born Suppiah, who now is an academic tutor and also a cricket coach in England, said to this reporter.
"I had never imagined I would hold the world record, and am very grateful for it". "My immediate thoughts were : Wow, it was about time that someone broke it. A lot of players have come very very close to it. It needed to be 7 wickets as taking 6 wickets and going less than 5 runs was going to be very difficult".
In fact, Suppiah's record (Somerset vs. Glamorgan at Cardiff in 2011) of 6 wickets had delivered two 2 balls less (3.4 overs) and had the economy rate of 1.36 against Colin Ackerman's 4.5.
"That's how cricket goes...I may have taken more wickets or I may have gone for more runs which would have affected my figures", Suppiah added further. "It won't surprise me if the record is broken again", Suppiah signed off.
